One of the biggest questions when staying or choosing a hotel is why should I stay there? What make it special? I am always very dubious about picking a hotel and will do a lot of research before choosing the right hotel. I will surf the next, look at reviews and also talk to the hotel to see what the staff are like. It is very important that in my down time I choose the right hotel.

La Mansion Arenal Hotel is a hotel that I have personally stayed at numerous times and have totally bought into the feeling and location of La Mansion Arenal and below are 5 reasons that I think why you should stay at La Mansion Arenal Lake Hotel:

1) The Location is peaceful and not close to the built up area of La Fortuna.

2) Private cottages, not a room!! You have your very own private cottage with sweeping lake views and private gardens

3) The staff are local and it is more like a family than a group of workers. You will see people are happy to be at La Mansion Arenal and always happy to help you with anything.

4) Value for money - in the current climate it is more and more important that you get the best value for money and at La Mansion Arenal you definitely get this. From $150 a night for a luxury 4 star hotel you cannot go wrong.

5) Owner managed – a lot of hotels are not run or managed by the owner and this way the driving force on a daily basis does not always have a vested interest in your happiness and also the quality of product offered. La Mansion Arenal is 100% owner managed and hence why you will actually be able to meet Godfried (alias Leo).

Hope this helps you make an informed decision about staying at La Mansion Arenal.

Richard

The current Lake Arenal has no always been as it is today. The Lake on further inspection is actually a resevoir and was form in 1979 for the purpose of the Costa Rican Electricity Boards plan to build a hydro-elcetric plant. This reservoir and the electricity it produces is estimated to power 60-70% of all of Costa Rica’s houses.

Before 1979 there was a town that sat in the middle of the now current Lake Arenal called ‘Arenal’. The inhabitants of ‘Arenal’ where moved to the current Neuvo Arenal, meaning new Arenal and the old Arenal at the bottom of the lake is called Viejo Arenal. It is said that when the Lake starts to dry up the steeple of the church can be seen.

The Lake today is a source of great fishing, kite surfing and wildlife as well as many Arenal Lake Hotels being located on its shores.

A suggested tour for the area is a sunset boat cruise so that you can explore the lake but also see the volcano as the sun sets in the background.

Lake Arenal is famous for its beauty however it is not well known for its amazing Bass fishing. Typically any other time of the year you can pull about 5-10 good sized fish out of the lake. April-November is the best time of year to fish Lake Arenal as the water is low so there are the same amount of fish in a lower lake volume.

The lake is low so there are a lot of stumps and grass around where you will be able to find bass hiding ready to strike. The current biggest bass pulled from Lake Arenal was around 20lb, however typically they are around 3lbs. The Lake has both rainbow and tiger bass.

You can expect to catch around 20 bass this time of year, however this is never guaranteed. La Mansion Arenal Hotel can reserve the fishing for you with their local Costa Rican Fishing expert Gerardo. All gear can be provided if necessary as well.

We are proud to offer an exclusive tour to the real virgin rain forest of SELVA LEONA, in the mountains of TILARAN.

G. PONTEUR, owner of Hotel La Mansion Inn, was invited by the owner of SELVA LEONA on March 5, 2002 to visit this spectacular reserve of 180 ha.(450 acres). Before that time, this hidden treasure had never been open to the public.

Once there you will experience a virtually untouched ecosystem of flora and fauna with the same awe the Spaniards must have felt when they arrived to this land in 1502, naming it Costa Rica (Rich Coast). With your trek into the forest you will have the chance to see many species of birds, including the birder’s holy grail, the quetzal. Three species of monkeys abound in this region with the howler monkey being the most prevalent. Reptiles such as poison dart frogs, the Jesus lizard, and numerous varieties of colorful snakes call this area home.

Your reward will be the discovery of some 10 waterfalls that flow from the mountains into the Rio Agua Caliente (warm water river), the highest of these being 100 feet. You can refresh yourself in the cool crystal waters before your hike out.

A covered boat on the Arenal Lake takes you along the Arenal Volcano to the other side of the lake. From there you will start a two hour horseback ride into the mountains. You will cross the Rio Grande several times, admiring the landscape, on your entrance into the forest. But if you desire you can do the ride in a 4×4 jeep

You will have to leave the horses or the vehicle at the border of the forest, where you will begin a hike of 3.5 hrs through the virgin cloud forest in search of birds, monkeys, flowers, and waterfalls. The trails go up and down hills, so good physical condition should be considered for this expedition.

On your exit from the forest an authentic Tico BBQ awaits you. This is a typical Costa Rican meal, served with the hospitality and humbleness that makes the Ticos such a special people.

The trip back on the horses or 4×4 to civilization will again take 2 hrs, after which you will cross the lake by boat and make the return journey to the hotel.

Clothes required: jeans, hiking boots, rain gear (it rains often in the cloud and rain forest..), swimming suit, change of dry clothes.

Rate: $ 150 pp

Departure: at 7:00 Return at approx 3:30 PM
